Action Map: Define Learner Actions

The goal of this training was to increase student engagement during inquiry-based activities.

To identify what educators needed to do differently in the classroom, I followed Cathy Moore’s action mapping approach.

Working with the Teacher Development Lead and myself as the subject matter expert, and drawing on peer-reviewed research on student motivation, I identified two key behaviors teachers must adopt to effectively respond to struggling students:

  • Interpret student resistance as a learning barrier (and not laziness)

  • Use facilitation responses that sustain thinking and grit

From there, we brainstormed learning activities through which the teachers would practice these behaviors, and the essential information they would need to do so.
