Action Map: Define Learner Actions

The goal was to increase student engagement during inquiry-based learning.

Using Cathy Moore’s action mapping approach, I worked backward from that goal to identify what teachers needed to do differently in the classroom. Working with the Teacher Development Lead and drawing on research on student motivation, I identified two key behaviors:

  • Recognize student resistance as a barrier to learning, rather than simply a lack of effort

  • Respond in ways that keep students thinking and working through challenges

From there, I designed activities where teachers could practice these behaviors in realistic classroom situations and identified the information and resources they would need to support them.
